Ability Improvement Examples
Point-Dexter: A power where the user had the ability to designate what that characters calls a Point and a Dexter. What happens is that whatever momentum is occurring on the Point will be equally applied to the Dexter as well. Not shared, but applied.
The user could set a table behind them as a Dexter and then set the mug their holding as the Point, so when they throw the mug across the room the table will go as well.
Potential drawbacks could be Conservation where the difference in masses manifests as an inverse difference in momentum, or maybe there is Strain where the differences in mass/momentum causes internal strain on the user. Maybe the user has to target something that has a point and a center of mass (so they can’t latch on to a flat section of a wall- it’s have to be a corner of the wall or something?)
Improvements could be a Conservation Buffer, increased Strain tolerance or resistance, maybe being able to target living things or larger things or even smaller things, ability to affect one’s self, and no longer needing to select something with a point and a center of mass.
Slip Screen: Named after all the reflective screens of modern day life, this ability allows the user to not just enter mirrors or other reflective surfaces but to also manifest them as space or manifest the reflections within. This is in addition to altering the dimensions of the reflection’s world and/or the real world.
A hallway with a mirror in front of it could be “stretched” to become longer by manipulating its reflection to look longer, or could be condensed by the same logic. A ballet room could have its physical space doubled as the mirrored world becomes physical and the mirror is made into this threshold between the two. A puddle of water reflecting the sky could become a hole into a mirrored version. All instances try to remain as Euclidean and as consistent to the original as possible.
Maybe they have to be touching the mirror to make active changes, maybe they need to maintain visual contact with the mirror’s surface, or the mirror world only extends to as far as the original mirror reflects making it possible to be trapped or trapped others. Maybe the mirror world is fragile and you have a limited time frame to be within it before it starts cracking from strain. All items from the mirror world may be fragile, or purely illusory. The dimensions may follow conservation, meaning the image’ volume must stay the same so as width, length, or height increases one or both of the others must decrease so volume stays the same.
Improvements include ranged manipulation, extending beyond the image and instead to all mirror images within an area, moving beyond pure reflective surfaces, extended stability of the mirror world, being able to enter the mirror world or bring others into it, items from the mirror world being more stable or lasting longer or being fully real but having weaker properties (so chairs are less colorful or comfortable). The volume constraint gets a buffer for you to add or subtract from at will is another example.
Twi-Light Manipulation: The ability to emit and manipulate both light and something called Twi-Light. In our world the light manifests typically as a white to golden hue with varying intensity and in the sort of style as a candle’s flame, a welding torch, or it could even be a soft glow. Funnily enough, the user can also actually absorb or diminish light making the area cast in shadows. The Twi-Light manifests in the same forms except almost billows off of itself like the fog from liquid nitrogen, it varies from black to a dark purple ichor, and acts differently. Where light reveals things here, Twi-Light shrouds then acting almost like shadow or “anti-light” but it stops around the level of making things very dim.
This power has three parts though; the second is that Twi-Light can be used in a space between light and dark to fully enshroud the area and enter the Twi-Light realm. In this realm, everything looks about the same except sources of light and dark are almost pitch black while the eaters where light and shadow meet are the brightest. Light and Twi-Light look the same here too, except Light makes things “dark” while Twi-Light perfectly illuminates. What is weird about this realm is that while the lay-outs are generally the same, it is affected by and inhabited by manifestations of people’s psyche’s. The thoughts of people, especially people who are currently in the area or have long-standing beliefs or relations to the area.
The final part is that using Twi-Light in our world can reveal and illuminate what is exactly in the same location at the Twi-Light Realm, and doing the same with Light in the Twi-Light realm reveals the real world. This means you can pull people into either world, or pull what’s in the opposite world into the one you’re currently in. This means you can literally weaponize manifestations of a person’s fear or doubt against them... if you can time it right and get out of dodge before it comes after you too.
Since I went into more detail here I’m skipping the used/drawbacks/improvements but I think you can come up with some on your own.
Stitch: The ability to stitch or connect thresholds to one-another. It has to be a threshold or physical boundary of some sort, whether that is a doorway, a line drawn in the sand, or the opening of a backpack- and it has to link to another threshold but it can be a different kind of threshold.
You could connect a backpack’s opening to your fridge’s door and just walk around with all the food and drinks you ow at your disposal, you could link a vault door to a door drawn in chalk nearby to break in.
Possible limitations could be needing to touch the threshold or both thresholds at the same time, maybe it’s temporary, maybe it requires focus, maybe you have to remain close to them both or can only have one pair at a time. You may only be able to set the threshold if you have access to both sides of each threshold (so you can’t link to the vault door unless it’s already open), maybe you have a maximum distance between the two, maybe the threshold needs two sides to it (so drawn doors don’t work).
Ranged connection, longer durations or even indefinite ones, more connections at the same time, tunneling through thresholds so they can stay closed and just act as open doors, etc.
That’s a wrap
