Of course, there's a slight religious connotation in more modern times. The Celts used to venerate the left hand/left handedness. When the British invaded, they attributed most of their practices to witchcraft. A little later, during things like the witch trials, that same left handedness was used as "evidence" for witchcraft, that view possibly relating to their view of the Celtic religion.
But to be absolutely clear, no organized religion worth their salt actually encourages such behavior. It's baseless cultural superstition or individual beliefs that one may obscure behind the name of religion.
