Spooky Month is creeping closer and closer and I’ve already been making some new monster-themed pages in celebration of it, such as Hunchback and Marionette Mimicry, as well as expanding upon by far one of my biggest pages on this wiki and my #1 personal favorite, List of Classic Monsters.
As always, if there’s any confusion of what a “classic” monster is. A classic monster is any kind of monster, creature or even phenomenon that are such long standing figures in pop culture and fiction that you’d be able to instantly recognize them, a monster that wouldn’t just blend in within a crowd of generic bugaboos or obscure folkloric creatures that haven’t appeared in enough movies yet. I’m talking shit like vampires, zombies, werewolves, Frankenstein’s monsters, what have you!
Here are a couple of ideas for more monster pages that I’ve been throwing around in my head that are derived from reoccurring tropes and archetypes in horror media and as Halloween mascots that would make for good additions to the list of Classic Monsters. Tell me what you think, I’d love to hear some insight and these ideas and if you have any ideas for some monster and Halloween-themed pages of your own, I would love to hear them also!
Anyways, here are the creeps and freaks that I’ve been thinking of making pages on!
Executioners
Much like Mad Scientists and Witch Doctors, The big scary guys wearing hoods and carrying around axes that you would see in dark fantasy settings really have become a monster all on their own despite being just guys, human beings, albeit scary human beings but there are some exceptions depending on the setting of course such as them being zombies or some other kind of undead, they can also be classified as a subspecies of Human Monster. I can see an Archetype:Executioner being a pretty legitimate addition to the ever extensive list of archetype pages that we have!
Candle Monsters
Monsters taking the form of living candles or being candle-like such as by possessing a body of wax are a pretty common sight when you think about, not on the same level as things like zombies and demons but they are common enough to the point where you see them in pieces of media that has a heavy focus on monsters, creatures and beasts. Such as in Pokémon with the Litwick family, Candle Golems from Dungeons & Dragons, and have you seen the thousand of different Halloween decorations that are literally just spooky, possessed candles? Candles of course are very common imagery in horror as a whole, whether as decorations in a haunted house or being used as conduits for practicing sorcery by witches and wizards. You can argue this is covered already by Candle Mimicry but there’s a ton of monster-related pages where they are arguably covered already by Mimicry pages but I think there’s a big difference between taking the form of something and being a monster version of that thing.
Moon Entities
Now, I’m not talking about aliens or beings that come from the moon like in the case of Lunarians, I’m talking monsters that literally are the moon itself. Moon Entities, or Moon Men if you want to be formal either take the form of humanoids with moons for heads such as the Heralds of Tzeentch from Warhammer 4K or they are actual, sentient moons like the one Majora’s Mask made famous. The concept of living moons or humanoids with moons and other celestial bodies for heads is fairly common Halloween imagery, appearing in the form of decorations and postcards which makes since, the moon, especially a full moon is synonymous with Halloween imagery so anthropomorphizing it as it’s own Halloween creature is a logical step forward. Admittedly this concept is a bit too specific and it could benefit a little more by incorporating creatures that embody other celestial bodies into the mix, monsters that are also entire planets are a fairly frequent trope as well after all!
Mimes
These eldritch abominations in black and white human suits are arguably a bigger blight on our society than clowns are and they deserve to have their own page on this site that will perfectly describe their unholy powers and repulsive, inhuman nature. Many mime-related abilities such as Miming are already on this wiki anyways so it’s only logical to finally put them all together in an Archetype page created for the monochromatic demons that crawled out from the fiery pits of the French catacombs to confuse and unnerve us with their macabre dance of death. Seriously though, I’m surprised there aren’t any noteworthy horror films about mimes, the closets examples that I know of is the short film, Mime on YouTube and the Terrifier films since, let’s face it, Art has more in common with mimes than clowns, the only thing he doesn’t have in common with them is that he’s actually entertaining to watch.
Living Paintings
Another really under appreciated monster and iconic form of spooky imagery that you would see while trapped in a haunted mansion alongside the likes of haunted suits of armor, possessed animal pelts, overgrown carnivorous plants and candelabra carrying ghost butlers. The concept of haunted/living paints can take the form of either ghosts who possess paintings or are just paintings who are alive to begin with thanks to some kind of supernatural phenomena. The most common example being “Scream Ghosts”, spirits with perpetually wailing grimaces based on the famous Edvard Munch painting that would also inspire one of the most iconic slasher villains of all time. I also just love the concept of monsters based around art in general.
Mud Monsters
Amorphous blobs that are made out of some kind of material are one of my favorite kinds of monster categories, Hedorah is my favorite Godzilla monster for crying out loud, “Elementals” are also something I find to be a really cool and equally underrated concept. So it should be of no surprise that I fuck with Mud Monsters pretty hard (or clay, whatever, same thing really) and there is a plentiful surplus of examples from every form of entertainment and even folklore you can possibly think of. From the many villains that take up the moniker “Clayface” in the DC universe to the Dorotabō of Japanese urban legend.
Tongue Entities
We have pages for entities based on eyes, brains, hearts, stomachs and yes, even whole mouths and yet no love for living tongues yet? Tongue creatures are fairly common, whether they take the form of actual, living tongues such as the alien tongue creature from Killer Tongue or beings based around tongues who’s whole point of existing is licking things with their big tongue(s), such as Lickitung from Pokémon and the Poxtongue from Dragon Quest.
