I added a new power to the wiki, please give me your thoughts.
Thank you, Akira Toriyama.
A legend not just of manga, but of pop culture the world over. You leave behind a wonderful, powerful legacy that will last long into the future, inspiring, helping, and bonding future generations, as you have those of today.
Like with many here and around the world, Dragon Ball has been a significant and brilliant part of my life, and has been something I have bonded over and through, being my first real exposure to anime and manga besides Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. I remember the excitement it brought me coming home from school to watch the original series; its laughs, adventures, and tournaments, the inspiration of seeing Goku climb Korin Tower and later ascend to the Lookout, the feelings of seeing Krillin be taken from us by Tambourine, endlessly playing Dragon Ball Advanced Adventure, going round to my friend’s house weekends and holidays to have my butt beaten by him in Budokai, Goku turning Super Saiyan, Gohan fighting Cell, Vegeta’s sacrifice, watching Dragon Ball Super with my brother and the hype of Ultra Instinct, going to watch the Broly movie with friend and family only to find out I accidentally booked the sub and not dub and having a laugh over that, we thoroughly enjoying the movie, and so, so much more.
The Super Saiyan transformation, ki blasts, power levels, instant transmission, Gotenk’s weird ghost technique, and all the rest. Dragon Ball triggered my initial interest in superpowers, and I likely wouldn’t have gone down the path that led me to Touhou, which firmly cemented my interest in superpowers, and thus I wouldn’t have ever come to this wiki if it wasn’t for it.
If you have never read Dragon Ball, or even heard of it, I can say with certainty that its influence will have reached you through its references, the works it inspired, or the works of creators it inspired. Alongside Dragon Ball: Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, and Dr Slump, all his works have all brought us great laughs, great moments, great inspiration, great friends, and great communities.
Goku taught us to work hard, be strong, and have fun, so let’s do just that.
Rest in Peace, Akira Toriyama, you will never be forgotten.
On top of posting a graphic image of someone else’s genitals, this is all absolutely unacceptable behaviour, and is absolutely not tolerated here. I don’t care if you’ve been a member of this wiki for 1 second or 10 years, the moment you make a single post like this, you’re getting banned on sight for being a cringe piece of sh*t like FlumptyHumptyNazi here. No questions. No warnings. No appeal. I hope I’ve made myself clear.
I didn't read it, and didn't care to. I saw the picture in it and hit delete.
Some cringe self-proclaimed no-no german posted a screenshot of someone else's d*** pic in discussions. Do not be like this person.
@Ludwigkoopa7000 2.O If a meta power is essentially just an absolute or omni power that already exists, it will be merged into that power. If there is no power similar, it will just be renamed. Some already say "is the absolute form of", yet use Meta in the name.
@Nyarlathotep99 If a power exists in the meta category without meeting the guidelines for powers that should now be in the meta category, it will just be removed from the category, not deleted.
A power may only face potential deletion or move to fanon through this if it specifically has "Meta" in its name.
@Aetherian321 I've updated the post to address this misconception used here, but I'll post it here for convinience:
A misconception commonly seen with meta is its definition of "above" and "beyond". However, these definitions are misunderstood to mean above and beyond in a conceptual or power-scaling sense (such as physics beyond physics, or variable manipulation beyond variable manipulation), when in reality they mean in a physical sense, such as "above the table", "beyond the wall", this usage exists in medicine "denoting the concept of after, subsequent to, behind, or hindmost".
As an example; metacarpals. Meta meaning beyond, and carpal meaning wrist, so metacarpal means "beyond the wrist", as these are the bones in your hands that attach to your wrist.
@AzQth That's right. Just updated the post to reflect this. o/
Consideration
After much consideration about the usage of the term "Meta" on SPW, we have come to the conclusion that, moving forward, we will stick truer to its definition and usage.
Meta powers on the wiki, possibly even against the original intention, have simply become "better than absolute" versions of powers, or used as the name of the absolute version of a power, as some even say "is the absolute form/version of", going against the meaning and usage of the term "Meta".
Definitions, Usage
The definitions and usage of Meta as as follows:
Meta:
- Showing or suggesting an explicit awareness of itself or oneself as a member of its category: cleverly self-referential.
- Referring to itself or to something of its own type.
- Concerning or providing information about members of its own category
- Pertaining to or noting an abstract, high-level analysis or commentary, especially one that consciously references something of its own type.
Meta- :
- Occurring later than or in succession to: after.
- Situated behind or beyond (physically).
- Later or more highly organized or specialized form of.
- More comprehensive: transcending, used with the name of a discipline to designate a new but related discipline designed to deal critically with the original one.
Meta is used in terminology referring to a subject which is "X about X":
- Metadata: Data about data
- Metagaming: Gaming the game
- Metamathematics: Mathematical theories about mathematics
- Metahumor: humour about humour
Misconception
A misconception commonly seen with meta is its definition of "above" and "beyond". However, these definitions are misunderstood to mean above and beyond in a conceptual or power-scaling sense (such as physics beyond physics, or variable manipulation beyond variable manipulation), when in reality they mean in a physical sense such as "above the table", "beyond the wall", this usage exists in medicine "denoting the concept of after, subsequent to, behind, or hindmost".
As an example; metacarpals. Meta meaning beyond, and carpal meaning wrist, so metacarpal means "beyond the wrist", as these are the bones in your hands that attach to your wrist.
Metaphysics
The only potentially counter to this that will likely be brought up is metaphysics, but I would like to show how it is not here, and this can be treated as the response to this matter as potentially raised in comments.
Metaphysics, the topic and the word, has taken on a entirely new context due to pseudo-sciences and spiritualism over time. In truth, Metaphysics, the word, comes from an editor of Aristotle's work. Aristotle had one work published "Physics", and then another following work, which his editor called "Metaphysics" or "after physics"; "the book that came after the book called physics", as it was the work that came sequentially after the work "Physics". The contents of the work Metaphysics follow the above meanings, as its contents were questions asked about why physics is the way it is, and deal critically with the study of physics.
Updated Definition and Guidelines of Use
From this moment onwards, we will be applying and enforcing the following:
Meta As a Category:
- Meta-Superpowers are superpowers about superpowers; superpowers that work only to interact with or alter superpowers, such as, Superpower Manipulation/Redirection/Bestowal/Immunity/etc.
- Powers that are aware and referential of the fictional work they are set in, such as Plot Manipulation, 4th Wall Awareness, Author Authority, etc.
- Meta <Thing> Manipulation Powers.
- Despite containing “Meta” in their name, the powers relating to meta fields; metadata, metagaming, etc., don’t necessarily need to go in the meta powers category. A power relating to metadata would go in the data-based powers category. A power relating to metagaming would go in the game-based powers category. In these scenarios, the prefix does not actually imply anything in common between them as a type of power.
Meta as a Power:
- Powers of the format "Meta <Thing> Manipulation" must be self-referential and introspective of the thing itself. Instead of manipulating the thing as normal, it would look at the notion of the thing, and manipulate that; what it is, where it comes from and where it can exist and work, why it exists and works, how it exists and works, etc.
- For example, where Fire Manipulation manipulates fire; generating it, controlling it, removing it, etc.. Instead of manipulating fire like normal, Meta Fire Manipulation would look at the notion of fire itself and manipulate that; what fire is, where fire comes from and where it can exist and work, why fire exists and works, how fire exists and works, etc.
Going Forward
This will further be applied retroactively to existing powers with "Meta" in the name and powers in the meta category, with edits, name changes, merges, and deletions/moves to fanon done as seen appropriate.
If an existing "Meta" power contains this new definition, but also other contents better suited in another power/other powers, those contents will be removed and added into that power/those other powers, and the page will remain.
If an existing "Meta" power does not contain this new definition, and its contents are similar to another power/other powers, it will be merged into that power/those powers.
If an existing "Meta" power does not contain this new definition, and its contents are not similar to any other power, it will be renamed.
The users of remaining "Meta" powers or renamed powers will be re-evaluated, if after this there are powers with no users, they will be moved into fanon.
If a power in the "Meta" category does not meet this new definition, it will be removed from the category.
Thank you for taking the time to read this,
Holokami
I'm writing to inform of a recent spate of vandalism on the Superpower Wiki. As you may have noticed today, I think about 200 random pages were made, and recently Complete Arsenal was accidentally deleted.
Recently, an individual has come to SPW with the expressed purpose of vandalising this Fandom for a reason as bafflingly nonsensical as it is pathetic. This has occurred since 21st April as far as we're aware, and each of the thirteen accounts they appear to have used so far has conducted vandalism strikingly similar in nature one after the other and sometimes within minutes or hours of a previous account being banned.
We are dealing with the situation behind the scenes, however, to tackle confusion in advance I thought I would write up this post. They're also randomly editing pages alongside the two things prior mentioned, and as such in case anything like destructive or random edits happen to a page, or a page gets deleted, or if a user starts to make waves of nonsense pages, this is most likely the cause, and we ask you report this to us so we can deal with it as soon as possible if we're not around at the time.
I would equally like to stress that if you find this individual's accounts, you don't communicate with them, not only will they be unable to reply for being banned, but I don't want you to waste your time or stress yourself with dealing with someone who apparently loves wasting their own time.
Thank you!
Hi!
Sorry, we're dealing with a vandal that's avoiding blocks. It seems Complete Arsenal was accidentally deleted in the process of undoing the mess they're leaving.
It's been restored now.
In the scope of using the term "demonic", Angelic-Demonic would be the true opposites. "Divine" refers to the state of Divinity, which in the Bible (the Divine being God) means it exists above the angels and demons.
This biblical view can't really be applied to any other myth, as they don't possess the biblical angels and demons referred to by those powers. Even if another culture in English has 'demons' without angels, it is most likely an inappropriate or mistranslation, or fails to capture the actual nature of those beings correctly. Divine as such from other myths and religions would simply exist along-side biblical angels and demons, but not in natural opposition to either.
