(note: these arguments were taken from my ass, so they will probably be shit or lame. If they are, sorry.)
Two arguments:
psychological argument (in the specific case of the hero having a trauma related to murder): basically to avoid comparing the origin of the trauma. Let's use Batman as an example, everyone knows that he lost his parents when he was a child and had them murdered in front of him. Something that Batman would least want is to compare himself to the murderer of his parents, regardless of the reason.
Marxist explanation: the villain sells content well to the producers, so they avoid killing him or (if he dies in some way or another) reviving him so they can sell more. It's capitalism.
