As an archetype, a court mage is a sorcerer who works for or serves a royal family (or any other main government body). Primarily these mages provide mystical advice and services as chancellors of the King, Queen etc., giving general wisdom in political and country level situations.
Most of these types of sorcerers are goodly beings only working towards the betterment of the realm they charged to serve and protect alongside the ruler of that realm. However, there are also evil sorcerers who get into these upper level positions and use them for their own power seeking agendas.
