"The Great Old Ones are a loose pantheon of ancient, powerful deities from space who once ruled the Earth and who have since fallen into a deathlike sleep. H. P. Lovecraft named several of these deities, including Cthulhu, Ghatanothoa, and Yig. The majority of these have physical forms that the human mind is incapable of processing; simply seeing them renders the viewer incurably insane. Although worshipped by deranged human (and inhuman) cults, these beings are generally imprisoned or restricted in their ability to interact with most people (beneath the sea, inside the Earth, in other dimensions, and so on), at least until the hapless protagonist is unwittingly exposed to them. Lovecraft visited this premise in many of his stories, notably his 1928 short story, "The Call of Cthulhu", with reference to the eponymous creature. However, it was August Derleth who applied the notion to all of the Great Old Ones."

Properties[]

The user can have the traits and abilities of the deities of the Cthulhu Mythos, which can be divided into four broad groups:

The Archetypes: Described in H.P. Lovecraft's "Through the Gates of the Silver Key" as archetypal entities who hold everything in existence as derivative facets of themselves, inhabiting the true nature of reality as a changeless, impartial totality that exists beyond all divisions and perspectives, with even the local identities identified as "the Outer Gods" being merely fragmentary, change-involving perspectives through which The Archetypes can choose to experience reality, in accordance to their own will.

Outer Gods: Described by H.P. Lovecraft as barely focused, near impersonal forces of nature (Nyarlathotep being the only one with real personality), uncaring and supremely indifferent. also know as the Ultimate Gods, they are all-powerful entities that reside within the formless outer chaos beyond existence, standing as the supreme governors and rulers of all reality, inhabiting a graveyard of rotten worlds and eternally revolving around the throne of their master and creator, Azathoth, playing discordant music and dancing madly for reasons unknowable to denizens of lower worlds, with the unearthly melody itself emanating from the outer realms and defining the laws of each universe in existence.

Great Old Ones: Generally physical beings, if vastly powerful, and as such somewhat more relatable. They could be considered as extremely advanced aliens, although not always made from the matter as we understand it and not as bound to the laws of nature. They are often worshiped as gods from earth early history and also worshiped by countless alien races and are also being who inhabit multiple dimensions at once.

Elder Gods: Little is known about them. They are said to be the "benevolent deities" and oppose the Great Old Ones. Some are known to humans as the gods of various mythologies and religions.
