"It has become clear to me that the only way you will accept your proper role is for me to utterly crush you here and now. So I am going to murder your lowlife girlfriend, burn this ship and everyone on it to ash, and chop off your hand. BECAUSE THAT IS HOW THESE THINGS ARE DONE! And when you are off brooding and healing for our inevitable final duel, I want you to remember one thing: that you forced me to do this. Just like Nale did."
― Tarquin to his son, Elan (The Order of the Stick)
"Listen Morty, I hate to break it to you, but what people call "love" is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard, Morty, then it slowly fades, leaving you stranded in a failing marriage. I did it. Your parents are gonna do it. Break the cycle, Morty. Rise above. Focus on science."
― Rick Sanchez to his grandson, Morty (Rick and Morty)

The archetype for the characters that possess or have traits of the Dark Father. Counterpart to Dark Mother.

Properties[]

As an archetype, the Dark Father is a powerful male fatherly figure that has come in many forms, sometimes of supernatural origins. A dark father represents negative aspects such as darkness, death, domination, forceful control, and/or cruelty which he uses to accomplish his dark agendas. This image appears in varies cultures: Christian and Jewish historical, Biblical, and religious text sources, as well as Norse, Greek, Roman, Celtic, Japanese, and other mythological stories, tales, and fictional texts. The significance of the Dark Father is if allowed to grow and become strong, is to overturn the whole order of things for their own benefits.

In regard to divine beings, it is often considered a variation of Father God, Malevolent Deity Physiology, & Dark Divinity.

There are some notable differences between Dark Father and his supposed counterpart of Dark Mother. While Dark Mothers simply produced dark offspring and they themselves might not be dark or evil, Dark Fathers, even if not necessarily evil, possess a dark, cruel, or otherwise villainous nature themselves. They use their children for their own ends, manipulating and control them as their servants, resulting in them being cruel and abusive towards their children when disobeyed.
