"Being God isn't easy. If you do too much, people get dependent on you. And if you do nothing, they lose hope. You have to use a light touch like a safecracker or a pickpocket."
― God Entity (Futurama)
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things."
― Isaiah 45:7

The archetype for characters who are gods or goddesses. The character has a Transcendent Physiology and is a Divine Power Source.

Also Called[]

  • Divine Being
  • Divine Spirit
  • Godly Being
  • God/Goddess

Properties[]

The character is or can transform into a god or goddess, one of the supernatural beings of Divinity within the known and respected universes. They may have complete, absolute powers of divinity. The character may be a Monotheistic Deity or the single supreme being of their reality, or they may be part of a pantheon and one of many deities.

A character can be a deity in terms of just status of being or and possibly also species. All deities have a transcendent physiology, but the specific physiology comes in many forms through different cultures, worlds, and realities. Most deities, from human made fiction, look human but they may instead be any type of animal, mythic creature, or embodiment. The character may even possess formlessness.

Characteristics[]

The deities of any given reality will be defined by a number of characteristics that can be divided into several levels.

Power & State[]

  • Omnipotence: All-powerful, inconceivable, illogical, eternal, complete, free, perfect.
  • Author Authority: Transcends the cosmology of the verse and stands above it.
  • Nigh-Omnipotence: Either omnipotent but with a certain weakness, or they are only limited to being 'omnipotent' over some things.
  • Supreme Divinity: Usually the most powerful god in a pantheon, having control over other gods and divine beings.
  • Cosmic Deity: Holds power over the universe and possibly the multiverse too.
  • Greater Divinity: Holds power and authority over one or more concepts, races, traits, locations, objects etc.
  • Demigod: An entity who is a God/Deity but is a mortal and has mortal attributes.
  • Lesser Divinity: Not technically a god, but still immensely powerful. Can usually be defeated through magical items, spells, or artifacts. Sometimes, they are only powerful when in a certain place or during certain conditions.
  • Superhuman: God only via virtue, basically no different from superheroes and the like.

Anthropomorphism[]

  • Form Transcendence: No physical, mental, spiritual, conceptual form. Or just having something incomprehensible that completely transcends that.
  • Ineffable Form: Gods with forms and personalities that are comprehensible to other gods, but incomprehensible to humans.
  • True Disembodiment: Gods that have forms and personalities but lack physical bodies, essentially being spirits.
  • Humanoid: Basically a very super superhuman, usually being taller and larger, possessing much greater physical capabilities (and sometimes intellect) and powers than regular humans. Usually has inhuman personality traits that distinguish them from humanity.
  • Inhuman God: Gods that have forms and personalities unlike humans, usually animals or even objects.

Necessities[]

Morality[]

  • Morality Transcendence: Is totally beyond morality and possesses absolute control over it.
  • Ineffable Morality: Gods that have morals and values, but humans are just unable to understand it.
  • Total Morality: Is either omnibenevolent or omnimalevolent.
  • Divine Morality: Greatly connected to one form of morality, but not totally it.
  • Human Morality: Basically a god with human morals and ethics.
  • Amoral: A divine being that doesn't understand or lacks morality, usually found in animals.

Amount[]

  • Numerical/Hierarchical Transcendence: God doesn't have a 'number' to them, basically being completely inconceivable in that aspect.
  • Pantheism: All that exists is God, God is all that exists.
  • Panentheism: Everything is inside of God (e.g. as ideas in his mind).
  • Monotheism: There is one, and only one, God. They hold absolute power and nothing is above them.
  • Dualism: There are two gods, both embodying divine opposites, such as good and evil. They usually are equal in power.
  • Polytheism: There are multiple gods, usually arranged in some kind of pantheon. Hierarchies are usually present among them. They also might be found in civilisations like ordinary humans with cultures and the like.
  • Animism: There are zillions of gods. Everything down to individual atoms has a god.
