"There is no purpose greater than ours. The world will founder without structure and discipline. It needs leadership to guide it to a new age of stability. It needs those with the will to stamp out the darkness that breeds in the cracks. We do this because we are compelled- by tradition, by loyalty, by laws. Without these, we are just animals. Evil rules over animals, corrupting and compromising, toppling empires; so, our empire must be incorruptible, must be uncompromising. Our conflict must be a righteous one. Your conviction will be tested, but among us, your faith will be unshaken... among the Templars."
― The Secret World
"Even when your kind appears to triumph...Still we rise again. And do you know why? It is because the Order is born of a Realization. We require no creed. No indoctrination by desperate old men. All we need is that the world be as it is. And THIS is why the Templars will never be destroyed!"
― Haytham Kenway (Assassin's Creed)

The archetype of a member of the Knights Templar. Variation of Knight and Paladin. Related to Magic Knight.

Properties[]

As an archetype, a Knights Templar member is a righteous knight/warrior who fights with religious conviction towards a cause/goal. These crusaders are/were non-fictional representations of justice, brotherhood and faith. However, they weren't without their faults and misdeeds, since the Templars brought about war and great zealotry, especially during The Crusades.

Though they may relate to paladins, Templars differ as their powers come mostly from a spiritual or religious source than magical. Christianity and Catholicism are among the most prominent conduits of their power, but some interpretations scarcely involve the faith. Especially in recent depictions, the Templars can be depicted as either divine fighters of good or tyrannical soldiers of evil. Interestingly, the Knights Templar were a multinational following, with members of European and Middle Eastern origins recorded throughout history.

History[]

The original Knights Templars were a Catholic Military Order. They were founded in 1119 and headquartered in Jerusalem, where they existed for nearly two centuries during the Middle Ages. The Roman Catholic Church endorsed them mainly, from which they grew in membership and power becoming the most skilled fighting units during the Crusades. The Templars mainly wore a red cross on a white mantle as their symbol, which became recognized throughout numerous civilizations. Funnily enough, this same design would later become the template for the original English flag.

The decline of the Templars began when they lost the Holy Land. They were accused of heresy and bigotry, with many of the French Templars arrested, tortured into false confession, then burned at the stake in 1307. Pope Clement V disbanded the order in 1312, since then the Knights Templars rapidly vanished, spawning myths and speculation that remain alive in the present day.
