As an archetype, a ruler of the underworld is a deity, undead lord, spirit or immortal-type being who rules the realm of the dead, also known as the underworld. The ruler of the underworld will have authority and duties within the underworld with total control over the lands, the elements, the barriers, the creatures and the spirits/ghosts within the underworld, effectively bending the realm to their very will. Underworld rulers are extremely powerful in their own right, however, can also be subservient to the very rules of the underworld depending the entity and if their able to bend those rules, even making new ones.

Unlike underworld lordship. which is just possessing total control over the underworld through mental, energy or even magical powers, but not necessarily it's actual ruling master. Whereas the underworld ruler is the reigning master of the realm of the dead and sits as monarch through royalty, divine selection or even through a curse, who will also possess extremely powerful abilities over the realm as its ruler.
