Despite their huge bulk and intimidating appearance, many stories of the Basajaun talk of a benevolent giant: a guardian of the woods and of flocks of sheep and a friend to the local shepherds. Their mere presence near the flocks of sheep would have been enough to frighten away the packs of wolves. They would warn the farmers with his cries when a storm was on its way, giving them time to bring the herds down to safety from their mountain pastures.
Far from being aggressive, he was protective of the herds of sheep, and they indicated his presence with a unanimous jolt of cowbells. When a storm or the wolves approached, he would shout and whistle on the mountain to warn the shepherds. In return, the Basajaun receive as a tribute a piece of bread that they collected while the shepherds slept.

Basajaun were also teachers, having developed skills in milling, forging and crop cultivation they teached these skills to the local population. They were adept at making tools and showed the famers how to make mills axles and saws and melt metals.
Despite what has been said, the Basajaun sometimes appear in the stories as terrifying forest men, of colossal forces with whom it was better not to meet, while in others the Basajaun appear as the first farmers and possessors of secrets of which the men learned through tricks how to grow wheat, the manufacture and use of the saw, welding, etc.
