The power to manipulate effigies. Sub-power of Sculpture Manipulation. Variation of Art Manipulation and Object Manipulation.
Also Called[]
- Effigy Control
- Representative Figure Control/Manipulation
Capabilities[]
The user can create, shape and manipulate effigies, specially-constructed figures meant to imitate or represent certain individuals. They can be made of any material (e.g., clay, cloth, straw, wax, wood) using different types of practices like carving, molding, sewing and/or weaving and can be simple or ornate according to the craftsman’s design. Whatever the method, the figure will be used to represent a target of interest. For traditional and religious practices, effigies are often crafted and destroyed to mark specific events or occurrences, such as changes in the seasons. In the political sphere, effigies have been used as derisive models of people who inspire contempt and hatred. They are mocked, beaten and even set ablaze as symbolic attacks on despised individuals. In ritual and mystical contexts, they are often used as conduits for channeling supernatural power to affect targets. They can be used to heal, manipulate or even harm those being represented.
Various effigies exist in different cultures for different purposes. Perhaps the most famous and infamous is the Voodoo doll, a crafted figure that (according to popular myth) will have pins inserted into it to remotely affect a target, usually for harm. Poppets, a type of European effigy, are dolls used to offer aid or even send harm to those they represent through spell casting. The Ushi no toki mairi ritual is a Japanese practice where an individual, usually a woman, sends a curse against someone by dressing in ceremonial garb and nailing a straw doll to a tree (in modern depictions). Whether properly depicted or given artistic revision for fiction, effigies have been significant tools in various belief systems, magical practices and cultures for millennia.
Users with this power can create effigies of various forms and sizes to serve different purposes. Aesthetically, they can simply be used as artistic pieces. In supernatural practices, they can be controlled, either as figures that move according to the user’s designs or be used for channeling mystical effects like healing, harming or manipulating a target, like in sympathetic magic.
