"Kanzen Saimin disrupts the senses so that the victim misidentifies the enemy. Appearance, shape, size, texture, and even smell are affected. In other words, a fly can appear to be a dragon, and a swamp a flower garden."
― Sōsuke Aizen (Bleach)
"People lived rely on and binded by their own knowledge and recognition, they called it by the name of reality. However, knowledge and recognition are ambiguous things, that reality might be an illusion. Everyone lives inside their assumptions. Don't you think?"
― Itachi Uchiha (Naruto)
"In the wreckage of paradise, where abandoned dreams lies, what can be more befitting than a mirage?"
― Regent of the Mask (Ninja Gaiden)
"When the real is treated as an illusion, the illusion is even more real than the truth. When what doesn’t exist is treated as something that exists, that fabricated truth is even more real than the truth that exists!"
― Ye Yuan (Unrivaled Medicine God)
"Illusion is the ultimate reality and reality is the ultimate illusion"
― Library of Heaven's Path

Fiction-Specific Terms[]

Capabilities[]

Users can manipulate illusions and hallucinations, allowing them to alter the perceptions of others and create entirely fabricated experiences. Illusions are false interpretations of existing stimuli, such as making a small object appear larger or masking a real location by disguising it. Hallucinations, on the other hand, involve creating sensory experiences without any basis in reality, such as making someone see a nonexistent creature, hear imaginary voices, or feel phantom sensations. This power enables users to distort the way targets see, hear, touch, smell, or taste, leading to a variety of deceptive and strategic effects.

At a basic level, users can distort the size, shape, or appearance of objects or environments, or mask individuals and areas to render them invisible or unrecognizable. More skilled users can create entirely immersive experiences, forging illusions that affect multiple senses at once. This can extend to replicating entire landscapes or scenarios, making them indistinguishable from reality for those affected. By exploiting a target’s fears, memories, or desires, the user can craft hallucinations tailored to destabilize them emotionally or mentally, often leading to confusion, fear, or manipulation.

Illusions can serve many purposes, such as making the user stealthy, hiding objects or places, disorienting opponents by distorting their spatial awareness, or tricking targets into harming themselves or others. At their most advanced, illusions can simulate physical sensations like pain or heat, blur the line between reality and fiction, and affect large groups of people simultaneously. However, illusions remain rooted in perception—they cannot physically alter reality. For example, illusory fire may look, sound, and feel real, but it will not cause actual burns unless the target’s mind is so thoroughly convinced that their body reacts psychosomatically.

While illusions often target visual perception, powerful users can manipulate all senses, making their creations fully immersive and nearly indistinguishable from reality. By blending creativity with precision, this power offers near-limitless potential for deception, misdirection, and psychological warfare.

However, at higher levels, illusions can extend beyond being perceptual distortions and become effects capable of simulating all manner of phenomena, from projected images to distortions in reality.

Associations[]

Limitations[]

  • Illusion Awareness/Negation/Reflection
  • May be unable to create accurate illusions, such as making things that don't exist or situations that would never happen in a million years. One common mistake is misplacing a feature on a person or forgetting to add shadows to their forms.
