"Speed is weight. Have you ever been kicked at the speed of light?"
― Borsalino/Kizaru (One Piece)
"Light can do a lot of things. It can illuminate. It can welcome. It can warm. As it turns out, it can also make laser beams that slice through protosteel"
― Toa Takanuva (BIONICLE)
"Those who fear the darkness have never seen what the light can do."
― Selenia (Magic: The Gathering)
"Power of the sun, gift me with your light. Shine into the dark, restore our fading sight! Rise into the dawn, blazing star so bright! Burn away the strife, let my hope ignite. Let hope ignite...."
― Rapunzel (Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure)

The power to manipulate light. Variation of Electromagnetic Spectrum Manipulation. Opposite to Darkness Manipulation.

Also Called[]

  • Light Bending/Control
  • Luminokinesis/Lumokinesis
  • Photokinesis
  • Photonic Manipulation
  • Visible Light/Radiation Manipulation

Capabilities[]

The user can manipulate light, the portion of electromagnetic radiation that is visible to the human eye and responsible for the sense of sight. Light behaves both as a wave and as a particle, a phenomenon known as wave-particle duality, and is composed of discrete energy "packets" called photons. Its properties include intensity, which determines brightness; propagation direction, which defines its path; frequency or wavelength, which influences color and energy; and polarization, describing the orientation of its oscillations. In a vacuum, light travels at a constant speed of approximately 299,792,458 meters per second (roughly 186,000 miles per second), one of the fundamental constants of nature. Regardless of its source or wavelength, light consistently moves at this speed in the absence of a medium, although it slows down when passing through materials like air, water, or glass.

By understanding and commanding these principles, the user can exert precise control over light's behavior. They can generate their own illumination in darkness or concentrate ambient photons into focused beams that burn, pierce, or slice through matter. By bending and refracting light, the user can alter its trajectory, crafting illusions, mirages, or even complete invisibility by guiding light around themselves or others. Shifting the wavelength allows them to access different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, extending perception into the infrared for heat detection or unleashing ultraviolet energy to cause chemical reactions or biological damage. The user can manipulate the polarization of light to eliminate glare, enhance vision, or affect how light passes through different surfaces.

At higher levels, the user can solidify coherent streams of photons into tangible constructs—creating shields, weapons, barriers, or tools made of “hard light.” These structures, while composed entirely of energy, behave like solid matter due to their tightly organized photon cohesion. Subtler applications include accelerating cellular regeneration through controlled exposure to specific wavelengths, enhancing vision in complete darkness, disrupting enemy targeting systems, or dazzling opponents with overwhelming bursts of brightness.

At the most advanced levels, the user may be capable of converting their entire body into a coherent stream of photons, allowing them to travel at speeds approaching the speed of light itself. In this form, the user effectively transforms their physical mass into pure energy, temporarily shedding the limitations of matter. While in a photonic state, they perceive the world differently, perceiving it as blurred, distorted, and stretched along the fabric of space. Distances that would normally take hours to cross are traversed in the blink of an eye.

However, this form of travel demands extreme precision and control. Even minor errors in the cohesion of their photon stream could cause the user to disperse irreversibly into ambient light. Environmental factors such as atmospheric particles, magnetic fields, or material obstacles present serious risks, as collision at near-light speeds could destabilize their form. Reassembling their body requires flawless control over particle interactions to ensure every atom returns precisely to its original place.

The scope of their abilities is bound by their mastery over the complex behavior of light itself. Energy demands, environmental conditions, and the limits of their own concentration shape what they can achieve. Whether used for illumination, deception, destruction, or healing, light becomes a versatile and inexhaustible tool in the user's hands—one as ancient and fundamental as the universe itself.

Variations[]

Associations[]

Limitations[]

  • Photokinetic Immunity
  • May be unable to create light, being limited to manipulating only from already existing sources.
  • Distance, energy mass, precision, etc. depend upon the knowledge, skill, and strength of the user, and their power's natural limits.
  • User's light is affected by everything that all light is, unless they are powerful/skilled enough to overcome these limits:
  • Could be overwhelmed by Darkness Manipulation.
  • Since light is a constantly existing element, the user will have to keep any light constructs in check to keep them from going on forever.
  • Weak against Light Boundary/Light Absorption.
  • User's light may blind others, unless protective measures are made.
