Properties[]
A Classic Monster is defined as being any kind of monster, creature or villain trope that has become such an iconic and reoccurring archetype in the horror, science fiction and fantasy genres that they can be easily identified at first glance and be considered a species of supernatural creature/phenomenon rather than a generic, nondescript monster that cannot be categorized in the same way as say, vampires or zombies can. Classic Monsters are frequently considered to be the mascots of horror fiction, pop culture and even an entire holiday due to their long-standing impact on the cultural zeitgeist.
Typically, this form of monster is defined by being closely affiliated with pop culture rather than folklore and mythology but in some, if not most cases, Classic Monsters are rooted in folklore and have become more mainstream and iconic figures in fiction through popular media such as film and most representations of said monsters are derivative of their pop culture counterparts, such as with vampires and Dracula.
Many Classic Monsters have also begun as relatively unique concepts that were not inspired by folkloric entities, originally appearing in popular media first but became so iconic and influential that they too have become reoccurring, archetypal figures in pop culture such as in the case of 1958’s The Blob popularizing the concept of “blob monsters” and Slimes.
In other cases, Classic Monsters can be born from a specific entity/character that have become so influential that they too inspire monster archetypes that are synonymous with horror culture and the Halloween season, such as in the case of Jekyll & Hyde becoming widely known as a “mad scientist” archetype that influenced the popular trope of two personalities residing in one body and constantly fighting for control, the most popular example being the DC Comics character, Two-Face.
