Properties[]

A Classic Monster is defined as a monster that has become a long-standing and iconic archetype in the horror genre, fiction, pop culture and even an entire holiday. Monsters that are so recognized in the cultural zeitgeist that they can easily be identified at first glance and can be considered a species of supernatural creature rather than a generic, nondescript monster that cannot be identified or categorized as easily as say, vampires or zombies.

Typically, this form of monster is defined by being closely affiliated with pop culture rather than mythology and folklore but in some, if not most cases, monsters that are rooted in folklore have become more mainstream and iconic figures in pop culture through media such as film and most representations of said monsters are derivative of their pop culture counterparts, such as with vampires and Dracula.

Many classic monsters and creatures also began as “unique” concepts that are not derivative of folkloric entities, originally appearing in media but have become so iconic and influential in horror culture that they too have become reoccurring, archetypal figures in pop culture such as in the case of 1958’s The Blob jumpstarting the concept of “blob monsters” and Slimes.

In other cases, classic monsters can be born from a specific entity/character that have become so influential in pop culture that they too inspire monster archetypes that are synonymous with horror culture and the Halloween season, such as in the case of Jekyll & Hyde becoming widely known as a “mad scientist” archetype that influenced the popular trope of two personalities residing in one body and constantly fighting for control, the most popular example being the DC Comics character, Two-Face.
