Superpower Wiki
"That voice, captain. What was it?"
"The most dangerous creature in all the seas: a mermaid."
― Smee and Hook (Once Upon a Time)
"I ran into them once when I was a whaler. They may be more beautiful than any woman you have seen, but they are as vicious as a blood-hungry shark! I know. I was the only member of my crew to survive."
― Eight-Fingers Oba, Heroes of Might and Magic IV, "The Strait of the Lost"
"They were beautiful, the stories said. Beautiful, but unpredictable. In some tales, seamaids were merciful and generous: they aided shipwrecked sailors, brought winds to becalmed vessels, and granted wishes to people who helped them. In others, they were malevolent and dark, luring unwary sailors to their deaths with their beautiful voices, bringing down storms, supping on the bones of the drowned."
― Upon a Starlit Tide
"I sat upon a promontory, and heard a mermaid, on a dolphin's back, uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath, that the rude sea grew civil at her song; and certain stars shot madley from their spheres, to hear the sea-maid's music."
― William Shakespeare

Capabilities[]

The user either is or can transform into a mer (either merman or mermaid) of the merfolk, gaining all the physical and mystical attributes associated with these aquatic beings. When in this form, their body seamlessly adapts to life underwater—most notably, the lower half becomes a powerful, fish-like tail covered in glistening, resilient scales that propel them through the ocean with incredible speed and grace. Their upper body remains humanoid, but often takes on subtle aquatic features such as webbed fingers, finned ears, or gill slits along the neck or ribs, allowing them to extract oxygen directly from water.

Merfolk are known for their dual nature, and the user reflects this through two distinct appearances. One form reveals their primal, dangerous side: scaly, iridescent skin shimmers with hues of green, blue, or silver, but the effect is unsettling rather than comforting. Their hands end in razor-sharp claws, perfectly suited for tearing through prey or defending their territory. Their eyes take on an otherworldly sheen—wide, unblinking, and inhumanly focused—and their teeth sharpen into predator-like fangs. This form embodies the raw, untamed essence of the ocean, evoking the ancient terror of deep waters where beauty gives way to lethality.

In stark contrast, the user can shift into a form of breathtaking allure. Their features soften and glow with a mesmerizing charm, and their voice becomes even more enchanting—almost irresistible. This is the aspect of the merfolk that sings sailors to their doom, that dances just beneath the surface like a vision, half-glimpsed in moonlight. Their beauty defies normal perception, shimmering with a magic that draws attention, affection, and sometimes obsession. Despite its allure, this form is no less dangerous—it is simply a different kind of power, one that disarms with charm rather than fear.

While merfolk are creatures of the sea, their ability to move on land varies widely among individuals and bloodlines. Some possess the power to fully transform into a humanoid form, shedding their aquatic features entirely and blending seamlessly into human society for a time. Others are able to split their tail into legs, often retaining faint signs of their marine origin—such as webbed toes, salt-touched hair, or skin that shimmers in the light. However, not all merfolk have this gift. Those who cannot shift must find alternative ways to traverse land: crawling, using magical assistance, or relying on water-bound vessels and allies. Time away from the sea may weaken them, and for some, being fully removed from saltwater for too long can be painful or even life-threatening.

Their physiology is perfectly suited to the vast and often hostile conditions of the deep sea. They can withstand crushing underwater pressure, navigate easily through the darkest depths, and swim for hours or even days without tiring. Their eyes adjust instantly to murky or lightless environments, enabling perfect vision where land-dwellers would see nothing. Sound travels differently underwater, and the user’s hearing is finely tuned to detect subtle shifts in currents, the songs of marine creatures, or even distant movement from miles away. Some possess an innate sonar-like sense, granting them the ability to “see” through sound and movement.

In addition to their physical prowess, many merfolk exhibit a deep, instinctive connection with aquatic life. The user may be able to understand or communicate with sea creatures, from the smallest schools of fish to massive leviathans, fostering a kind of kinship that land-dwellers can scarcely imagine. This bond may extend to an empathetic awareness of the ocean’s moods and currents, allowing the user to sense storms, disturbances, or changes in the sea long before they become visible.

While their power is rooted in biology, merfolk often carry an ethereal, magical quality. Their voices can become hauntingly beautiful, capable of luring listeners into a trance-like state or compelling them to obey—a talent known in legend as the siren's song. In more mystical variants, the user may manipulate water itself, calling it to rise and move at their will, or healing others using saltwater or song.

Merfolk have long been surrounded by conflicting folklore. In some tales, they are perilous beings—harbingers of shipwrecks, storms, and floods. Their presence is seen as an omen of drowning or disaster, and their beauty a lure to destruction. Yet, in other traditions—or sometimes even within the same one—they are deeply benevolent. They grant blessings, teach lost arts, or fall in love with mortals, crossing the boundary between worlds in acts of compassion or curiosity. This duality defines them: beings of the sea, as vast and unpredictable as the ocean itself, capable of both devastation and wonder.

Above all, Merfolk Physiology grants a second home beneath the waves: a domain where they are swift, strong, and almost otherworldly—an elegant and dangerous embodiment of the ocean’s mystery and power. Whether appearing as a dazzling vision of enchantment, a fearsome creature of the deep, or a liminal being walking the line between sea and shore, the merfolk is a force to be reckoned with—mythical, mutable, and enduring.

Variations[]

Mer Types[]

Associations[]

Limitations[]

  • May have complications when transitioning from water to air.
  • Ability to remain out of water varies: some are completely unable to breathe air and begin immediately suffocating out of water, others are able to breathe air but need to stay wet to avoid drying, and others being able to stay on land for prolonged periods of time with little to no ill effects.
  • Scales and skin may dry when overexposed to the sun or artificial heat, such as fires or heaters.
  • May be vulnerable to certain diseases.
  • Lack of legs may pose locomotion difficulties on land: some are able to change between legs and fins, others cannot and are stuck with a tail even out of water.
    • The "non-changers" vary in their ability to move on land, some can move upright relatively normally walking/hopping on tailfins, others slither upright across land and some have to drag themselves/crawl on ground.

Trivia[]

Though merfolk are most commonly associated with the vast saltwater oceans, their relationship with other bodies of water is more complex and varied than legends often suggest. Some merfolk can traverse freshwater environments—rivers, lakes, marshes, and even hidden underground springs—though their ability to thrive in such places depends on their lineage and natural affinity. Ocean-born merfolk may find freshwater uncomfortable or disorienting, their gills less efficient and their senses dulled the longer they remain away from the sea. Still, many are capable of passing through these environments briefly, especially when migrating, seeking refuge, or pursuing prey or purpose.

In contrast, certain merfolk are born of freshwater itself. These beings have adapted fully to their environments, with appearances and behaviors suited to their specific habitats. They might be smaller and more agile, with muted scales that blend into riverbeds or dense vegetation. Their temperament often reflects the nature of the waters they inhabit—still and watchful like a mountain lake, or swift and unpredictable like a rushing river. Some are protectors of sacred pools, while others are feared as spirits who guard dangerous stretches of water from human interference.

There are also merfolk who exist between these two extremes—amphibious wanderers capable of navigating both fresh and saltwater realms. Whether through rare genetic traits, ancient enchantments, or a deep-rooted magical resonance with water itself, these individuals move freely across boundaries that separate aquatic tribes. In more mystical settings, the very nature of water bends for them: a seemingly ordinary river might serve as a hidden passage to the sea, or a lake may act as a veil between worlds, revealing an entire kingdom beneath the surface to those who know how to see.

These variations are not just physical but cultural as well. In some regions, merfolk are feared as harbingers of floods, storms, and drownings—creatures whose presence spells ruin for coastal towns or passing ships. In other traditions, they are revered or romanticized as gentle spirits who offer aid, bestow blessings, and sometimes even fall in love with mortals. Such contradictions only deepen the mystery that surrounds them.

The ocean may be their heart, where their power resonates most deeply and their songs are strongest, but the truth is broader: the water—all of it—still answers to them in some form. Whether as myth or reality, merfolk remain inseparable from the water, and as varied and unpredictable as the tides themselves.
