"I take power from the underserving. Its kinda my thing."
― Agatha Harkness after absorbing a small portion of Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch's Chaos Magic (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
"Woah. What a rush. How do you do it kid? Even Superman never recharged this fast."
― Rudolph "Rudy" Jones/Parasite after absorbing Superboy's powers. (Young Justice)

The power to absorb powers from others. Sub-power of Superpower Manipulation. Not to be confused with Power Replication.

Also Called

  • Ability Absorption/Assimilation/Drain/Draining/Siphoning/Stealing/Theft
  • Bending Severing (Avatar: the Legend of Korra)
  • Power Assimilation/Drain/Draining/Sapping/Siphoning/Stealing/Theft

Capabilities

Users can absorb powers from others, usually temporarily and the victims naturally regain their lost power, but some users may be able to absorb powers permanently.

Applications

Variations

Associations

Limitations

  • May not be able to absorb technology-based abilities, only to steal the power to manipulate it, unless they have Technological Assimilation or Property Absorption.
  • Cannot absorb Omnipotence, Omnipresence, Omniscience, Omnilock or other Omni Powers.
  • Despite the powers being absorbed from other opponents, the powers will still have every single limitation that the abilities would possibly possess, for example, Fire Manipulation is useless against Fire Immunity.
  • User cannot absorb powers that are linked to basic anatomy.
  • Cannot absorb any power from those with Power Absorption Immunity, Power Anchoring or Singularity.
  • Unlike what Power Replication is capable of during supportive combat, the user's power cannot work as a supportive ability in of itself when forced to rob their own friends' abilities, unless they also have the power to transfer them back to them.
  • Does not work against Absorption Immunity, Absorption Negation, Flawless Indestructibility and Meta Power Immunity.
  • Two results following user's death:
    • The stolen powers return to their original owners.
    • The powers vanish out of existence.
  • Absorbed powers may be temporary, requiring the user to absorb more and more in order to get the power again. This may cause Addiction.
  • May be permanent on the target and/or User.
  • May be unable to use the absorbed powers.
  • May be unable to either discard or transfer the powers.
  • May be constantly active.
  • May be limited to how much one can absorb.
  • May have limited range, including touch only.
  • May be need see the activation of the power.
  • May need to fulfill certain requirements in order to absorb a power.
  • Power may no longer be usable if the original user of the absorbed power dies.
  • May not be able to choose which power they can absorb.
  • May be unable to control absorbed abilities.
  • May be limited to beings that are relatively similar to the user.
  • Users of Indomitable Will may be resistant.
  • May gain only weakened variations of others' powers.
  • Absorbing too much power may be fatal if the users body normally is not as strong as the target.
  • Physical powers, like Multiple Arms and Multiple Eyes, may be painful to absorb.
  • May be unable to evolve/improve the power as the original user can, unless they also have Enhanced Power Absorption.

Notes

  • Energy Absorption: Energy absorption is similar to power absorption in that both powers are used to transfer an entity's power to another entity. The difference is that energy absorption only transfers the energy (which the receiving person can use against their enemies with their own powers), while power absorption transfers an actual arsenal of powers (the receiving person is granted the powers of the first person and can use powers they may not have otherwise).
