Capabilities[]

Users, either innately or through training, are masters of operating tanks, armored fighting vehicles intended as primary offensive weapons in front-line ground combat. Tank designs are a balance of heavy firepower, strong armor, and good battlefield mobility provided by tracks and a powerful engine; usually their main armament is mounted in a turret. Users may be masters of each specific type of tank.

Applications[]

By the Whole Tank[]

By Tank Crews[]

Commander[]

The commander is responsible for commanding the tank, with all-round vision devices rather than the limited ones of the driver and gunner. He guides the gunner roughly onto target and guides the driver around turns and obstacles.

Gunner[]

The gunner is responsible for laying the gun, the process of aiming an artillery piece at targets. It may be laying for direct fire, where the gun is aimed similarly to a rifle, or indirect fire, where firing data is calculated and applied to the sights. The term includes automated aiming using, for example, radar-derived target data and computer-controlled guns. Gun laying means moving the axis of the bore of the barrel in two planes, horizontal and vertical. A gun is "traversed" (rotated in a horizontal plane) to align it with the target, and "elevated" (moved in the vertical plane) to range it to the target.

Loader[]

The loader loads the gun, with a round appropriate to the target (HEAT, smoke, etc.) as ordered by either the commander or the gunner. The loader is usually the lowest ranked member of the crew. In tanks with autoloaders this position is omitted.

Driver[]

The driver drives the tank, and also performs routine maintenance on the automotive features.

Variations[]

  • Assault Gun: A type of self-propelled artillery which uses an infantry support gun mounted on a motorized chassis, normally an armored fighting vehicle, which are designed to provide direct fire support for infantry attacks, especially against other infantry or fortified positions.
  • Amphibious Tank: A tank that is a means of combat viable on land as well as on or under water.
  • Cruiser Tank/Cavalry Tank: A British tank concept of the interwar period for tanks designed as modernized armored and mechanized cavalry.
  • Flame Tank: A type of tank equipped with a flamethrower, most commonly used to supplement combined arms attacks against fortifications, confined spaces, or other obstacles.
  • Heavy Tank: These tanks generally sacrificed mobility and maneuverability for better armor protection and equal or greater firepower than tanks of lighter classes.
  • Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV)/Mechanized Infantry Combat Vehicle (MICV): A type of armored fighting vehicle used to carry infantry into battle and provide direct-fire support.
  • Infantry Tank: A concept developed by the United Kingdom and France in the years leading up to World War II. Infantry tanks were designed to support infantrymen in an attack. To achieve this, the vehicles were generally heavily armored to allow them to operate in close concert with infantry even under heavy fire. The extra armor came at the expense of speed, which was not an issue when supporting relatively slow-moving foot soldiers.
  • Light Tank: A tank variant initially designed for rapid movements in and out of combat, to outmaneuver heavier tanks. It is smaller in size with thinner armor and a less powerful main gun, tailored for better tactical mobility and ease of transport and logistics.
  • Main Battle Tank: A tank that fills the role of armor-protected direct fire and maneuver in many modern armies. Cold War-era development of more powerful engines, better suspension systems and lighter composite armor allowed for the design of a tank that had the firepower of a super-heavy tank, the armor protection of a heavy tank, and the mobility of a light tank, in a package with the weight of a medium tank.
  • Medium Tank: A classification of tanks, particularly prevalent during World War II which represented a compromise between the mobility oriented light tanks and the armor and armament oriented heavy tanks. A medium tank's classification is not actually based on weight, but off of tactical usage and intended purpose.
  • Missile Tank: An armored fighting vehicle fulfilling the role of a main battle tank, but using only guided missiles for main armament.
  • Stealth Ground Vehicle: A type of armored fighting vehicle capable of stealth.
  • Super-Heavy Tank: Any tank that is notably beyond the standard of the class heavy tank in either size or weight relative to contemporary vehicles. Programs have been initiated on several occasions with the aim of creating an extremely resilient vehicle for penetrating enemy formations without fear of being destroyed in combat.
  • Tank-Tread Mecha: A mecha that has the lower body of tank.
  • Tankette: A tracked armored fighting vehicle that resembles a small tank, roughly the size of a car. It is mainly intended for light infantry support and scouting. Colloquially it may also simply mean a small tank.
  • Tank Destroyer: A type of armored fighting vehicle, armed with a direct fire artillery gun or missile launcher, designed specifically to engage and destroy enemy tanks, often with limited operational capacities.

Associations[]

Limitations[]

  • May only specialize in certain types of tanks.
  • May take a degree of training or exposure
  • May take time to achieve mastery.
  • Are weak against anti-tank guns, anti-tank guided missiles and tank destroyers.
