Users with this ability are afflicted with a degenerative curse due to excessive use of forbidden and dark magic. This transforms them into monstrous forms with fantastical abilities, usually at the cost of becoming addicted to dark magic.
The degeneration can start slowly or be a rapid change, but if left unchecked, it can transform the individual into a demon or other negative-aligned creature, due to deforming not just the body and mind but the very soul itself.
Dark Magic Degeneracy is one of many sub-types of degenerative curses and thus, is reserved for individuals who are specifically stated to be transformed into such a state by their devotion to the dark arts.
