Superpower Wiki
"Water is the element of change."
― Iroh (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
"Be formless. Shapeless. Like water. Now, you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put water into a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend."
― Bruce Lee
"Water—the mighty, the pure, the beautiful, the unfathomable—where is thy element so glorious as it is in thine own domain, the deep seas? What an infinity of power is in the far Atlantic, the boundary of two separate worlds, apart like those of memory and of hope!"
― Letitia Elizabeth Landon

Fiction-Specific Terms[]

Capabilities[]

Users have the ability to create, shape, control/move, and otherwise manipulate water in all forms: whether sea or inland, salt or fresh, hot or cold, muddy or pure, hard or soft, heavy or light, flowing or standing, on earth or in the sky, above ground or under, outside or within living things, and so on. Their control may extend to water in all its aggregate states: liquid, gas (steam/vapor), and solid (ice). The user may be able to freely phase-change water from one state to another, as well as control other inorganic compounds contained in water (e.g. salt).

Commonly seen offensive applications of hydrokinesis include sending forth streams and waves of water to crash into/wash away enemies, shaping and condensing water into quasi-solid constructs for attack (e.g. giant arms or whips), creating extremely high-pressure waterjets to pierce/slice through matter, materializing globes of water around enemies to drown them, and even draining all water out of targets to dehydrate them, rendering them dessicated husks. Defensive applications involve levitating water around oneself as makeshift shields or walls/barriers, summoning large domes of water, etc. Auxiliary uses include transportation by surfing on waves, creating air-filled pockets to remain dry and breathe while underwater, and suspending oneself midair upon waterspouts. Particularly skilled hydrokinetics may extent their control to the atmosphere and water-based weather phenomena, such as clouds, mist, precipitation, and rainstorms. Amongst the classical elements, water is usually a safe counter against fire, which it can easily extinguish by absorbing heat and displacing oxygen. In addition, a water manipulator may counter — or instead be countered by — an ice manipulator, with either side potentially able to melt/freeze the other's ice/water.

Exceptionally adept water users may be able to alter the chemical properties of water at will, e.g. density, pressure, condensation, viscosity and ad-/cohesion, salinity, temperature (from scalding to freezing, thus producing steam and ice), miscibility and polarity/solvent power, acidity, conductivity, etc., even endowing water with exotic properties that it would not naturally have (such as being extremely sticky or acidic). A hydrokinetic may even be able to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gas under their own power, or instead merge ambient oxygen and hydrogen together into new water.

Furthmore, due to the omnipresence of water in all organisms (humans, plants, animals, even microbes), the ability to control water stands out among stock elemental powers for its potentially great influence on life itself; the average human adult is approx. 60% water (via blood, intra- and extracellular fluids, etc.), making water manipulation exceedingly dangerous should the hydrokinetic in question be able to exert control over these bodily fluids.

Levels[]

Beginner Level: At the "beginner" level of water manipulation, users can control and possibly create water with a basic degree of proficiency. They can form small spouts and geysers, manipulate their shape and size, and control their water's temperature with moderate precision (possibly dependent on the presence of impurities within the water). Users are capable of producing simple water-based attacks in the form of waves and streams. However, their control over the movements and properties of water may be somewhat limited in degree/scope, making it challenging to maintain perfect control.

Intermediate Level: As users progress to the "intermediate" level of water manipulation, their abilities grow more refined, versatile, and larger in scale. They can generate large waves and manipulate them with greater control. Users gain the ability to create more complex water-based attacks, such as larger waves, streams of water, or constructs of condensed water. They can conjure defensive water barriers and control the spread of water over a wider area. Additionally, they can enhance the intensity (heat and pressure) of the water, allowing them to inflict more damage and exert a greater influence over their surroundings.

Master Level: At this level, total "mastery" over the water element is achieved, unlocking the element's full potential in all three forms: liquid, solid, and gas. The user can manipulate water with outstanding precision, alter its properties at will, and produce extremely large and powerful tidal waves/tsunamis capable of flooding large areas and/or overwhelming huge swathes of enemies even on dry land. Users can create massive waves to crash down upon targets, causing extensive destruction, or bring forth enough water to completely change the terrain, converting barren wastelands into small oceans. The amount of water controlled may range from lakefuls to entire oceanfuls, or even cover the whole planet's hydrosphere for users with supreme levels of mastery, making them akin to living natural disasters.

Associations[]

As one of the classical Elements, water is associated with:

Limitations[]

  • Water Absorption/Water Negation.
  • Users may only be hydrokinetic in the strictest sense, i.e. they are able to control water from pre-existing sources, but not create water from nothing.
  • Range of effect, controlled mass/volume, precision, etc. depend upon of the knowledge, skill, and strength of the user, and their power's natural limits.
  • Controlling and manipulating great bodies of water (ponds, lakes, seas, oceans), especially over extended periods, may be exhausting.
  • May be limited to control over certain types of water, e.g.: liquid water, raw/natural water, fresh water, sea/salt/brackish/briny water, etc.
  • Susceptible to Electricity Manipulation if the water contains a lot of chemical impurities like ions or salts (thus, completely pure water would be resistant).
  • Other/related elements may counter water, e.g.: Ice and Cold (users of which may freeze water to forcibly take it under their own control), Heat, Fire and Magma (which may evaporate water if hot enough), Air/Wind (may blow water off its course/make it difficult to control), Earth (rock-solid barriers may be used to block off/divert water, and soft earth can absorb it), Sand (use of silicate particles to absorb moisture), etc.
  • May not be effective against Oil Manipulation since oil is hydrophobic, meaning water-repellent.
  • Electrolysis could be used to convert water into oxygen and hydrogen.
